When a separation needs security

Most employee separations are uneventful. Some are not. Risk goes up when the person has made threats, has access to weapons or critical systems, is being removed for violence or theft, or when a layoff or strike already has the workplace on edge.

The four kinds of employee separation:

Organizations name these differently. In practice, separations usually fall into four groups:

1. Voluntary termination — The person chooses to leave for another job. Security is rarely needed unless there is already conflict or they still have access to sensitive areas.
2. Involuntary termination — The company ends employment, usually for good. This is the most common setting for a volatile exit: surprise, anger, and loss of access happen in the same hour.
3. Retirement — The person leaves the workforce by choice. Low risk in most cases; we are sometimes asked to be present for a senior leader with keys, codes, or a large following on the floor.
4. Layoff — The company ends employment, sometimes temporarily. Volume and emotion are the issues: many people, same day, rumors, and phones out in the parking lot.
